Therapy

What to expect?

You are welcome to take a look at the information on the website and to get in touch with any questions you might have.  Once you have decided you would like to go ahead, we can book a date* and time for the first appointment .  You will be asked to complete a Registration Form and you will be sent a copy of the Terms and Conditions.  Unless you are going through insurance, payment will be required prior to the appointment please. 

The first session will be a psychological assessment to discuss the difficulties you are experiencing, how they developed, your hopes and goals for therapy, and to make a plan for how to proceed.  This us an important step in order to make links as you move forward.  

The aim and experience of psychological therapy varies from person to person.  The focus may be on understanding yourself better or recognising your triggers - developing a psychological formulation can help here.  We might use particular therapy models, or a combination, to support you to learn coping strategies, to learn to adjust or accept, or to become unstuck and move forward.

I can offer a range of therapeutic models to tailor your therapy to you and your preferences / needs.  These include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) - see the separate tab

  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

  • Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT)

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Mindfulness

  • Person-Centred Therapy

  • Family & Systemic Therapy

Please note I do not currently offer diagnostic assessments.

Therapy can be an intense, emotional process.  It is not unusual for therapy to stir things up before you feel better.  As you can imagine, you are perhaps facing problems that have been suppressed for some time, or putting them under a spotlight to explore the nature and impact of what is going on for you.  But this can be really helpful to drive change, and we will of course go at your pace and consider extra support if needed.

*Initial appointments are subject to availability (however when you begin therapy,  I will endeavour to reserve a regular session time for you)
